Launched in October 2013 by Hangzhou Tourism Commission, Modern Marco Polo Global Souvenir Exchange Campaign is a global tourism souvenir exchange platform of Hangzhou to to welcome travelers from all corners of the globe.
The Modern Marco Polo Global Souvenir Exchange Campaign is one of several initiatives under the “Modern Marco Polo – Hangzhou Doctors” global recruitment campaign. As part of this campaign, Hangzhou seeks to preserve the spirit of Marco Polo’s mission – to encourage travelers to share their knowledge and experience of the local customs and different cultures of cities across the globe through travel souvenirs and memorabilia on the social media platform Facebook.
As the organizer, Hangzhou provide its famous silks, Buddhism-themed postcards and oil-paper umbrellas in exchange for other participants’ souvenirs and memorabilia, expressing the city’s good wishes to everyone, everywhere. Anyone who would like to participate in the campaign only need upload the most representative photos of their city souvenirs on Facebook and add their post to the related activity blogs on the Hangzhou Facebook homepage. Then, Hangzhou will kick off the souvenir exchange for supporters and fans. During the campaign, the homepage also include a special topic section, presenting memorabilia from the countries along the route taken by Marco Polo during those years, allowing visitors to the site to share in an interesting and interactive experience.
During the same period, the city also launch the “My Chinese Costumes” campaign, providing fans worldwide with an opportunity to interact with and experience Chinese traditional dress and to appreciate the beauty of the silks of China’s Hangzhou.
