Life Works Here, Remote Working in Northwest Arkansas

Incentive program to attract remote workers to move to Northwest Arkansas.

Launched on November 2020, Life Works Here is incentive program to attract remote workers to move to the region of Northwest Arkansas, which brings to light the lifestyle and career benefits offered by the region.

Made possible by philanthropic support from the Walton Family Foundation at the recommendation of Steuart Walton and Tom Walton, the Life Works Here initiative is sponsored by the Northwest Arkansas Council. It is the latest element in a broader strategy to build upon Northwest Arkansas’ strong economic foundation and position the region for the future.

Life Works Here is investing more than $1 million over six months for the initiative, and offering a substantial cash incentive for some of the remote workers to put down roots in Northwest Arkansas – $10,000.

In addition to $10,000, incentive recipients will be gifted a street or mountain bicycle to help you take advantage of the 162 miles of paved trails, the 37-mile Razorback Regional Greenway and the 322 miles of world-class mountain biking trails that has made outdoor enthusiasts flock to the area. Alternatively, participants can choose an annual membership to one of our world-class arts and cultural institutions.

The program touts Northwest Arkansas as having one of the best living costs, plentiful outdoor lifestyle perks, nationally ranked arts, culture and cuisine and per capita income that’s 14% higher than the national average.

In order to be eligible for the program, applicants must have the ability to relocate to Northwest Arkansas within six months of acceptance, sign a lease for local housing or purchase a house, be at least 24 years old, have at least two years of work experience, have full-time remote employment (which includes self-employment), currently reside outside of the state of Arkansas, and be a U.S. citizen or have the necessary credentials required to work legally in the U.S.

Eligibility Check List:

  • At least 24 years old
  • Have at least two years of work experience
  • Have full-time employment (which includes self-employment)
  • Currently resides outside of the state of Arkansas
  • Can relocate to Northwest Arkansas within six months of acceptance
  • U.S. citizen or has the necessary credentials required to work legally in the U.S.

A review panel selected by the Northwest Arkansas Council will evaluate individual applicants, interview candidates and award the incentives to selected applicants. If selected, recipients use the funds to help set up their new life anywhere in Benton and Washington counties.

On February 2021, Northwest Arkansas Council announces first round of Life Works Here recipients. The incentive program attracted more than 26,000 applications from candidates in more than 115 countries and all 50 states.

A handful of recipients highlighted include:

  • An executive chef and James Beard Foundation Impact Fellow from Atlanta
  • A digital marketing manager from Denver
  • A music producer and creative community curator from Los Angeles
  • A gaming producer from Los Angeles
  • And a cloud technology manager from San Francisco

Beyond moving to Northwest Arkansas, Life Work Here recipients are asked to participate in marketing campaigns to attract other remote workers to the region and have committed to volunteering in the local communities.
