Remote work is a part of the broader umbrella of fexible work. The definition of the term “remote work” itself is still somewhat misunderstood owing the wide arrangement of different working arrangements it can encompass.
According to Gartner Glossary, remote work, also known as work from home (WFH) or telecommuting, is defined as a type of flexible working arrangement that allows an employee to work from remote location outside of corporate offices. For employees who can complete work offsite, this arrangement can help ensure work-life balance, access to career opportunities or reduced commutation costs. Benefits for the company include increased employee satisfaction and retention, increased productivity and cost savings on physical resources. Remote work arrangements can be temporary or permanent, part-time or full-time, occasional or frequent.
Remote Year also define remote work as a working style that allows professionals to work outside of a traditional office environment. It is based on the concept that work does not need to be done in a specific place to be executed successfully. As part of the broader umbrella of flexible working, remote work encompasses a number of different working arrangements and can mean different things to different people. The many phrases used in reference to remote work include telework, e-Work, telecommuting, telework, hub-work, homework, co working, hotdesking, smart working, intelligent working, mobile work, home office, virtual office, locationless work, and platform work.
Each of these phrases carry their own meaning and connotations. As a result, there is a lack of consensus on a definition for remote work, and proper terminology for the practice of working outside an employer’s premises, enabled by technology.
The 2002 European Framework Agreement on Telework defines telework as “a form of organising and/or performing work, using information technology, in the context of an employment contract/relationship, where work, which could also be performed at the employer’s premises, is carried out away from those premises on a regular basis.”
The practice of remote work became much more mainstream during the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic of 2020-21, when millions of peoples were forced to start work from home for the first time.
